We got our 'you will be getting you stimulus check in the mail soon' letter on Monday and ever since then I have been anxiously checking the mail to see if it has arrived. We should have gotten ours months ago but we didn't because there was some glitch in the IRS' direct deposit system for folks that filed their taxes through a company that took their fees directly out of the tax return.
I feel really guilty that I have been looking forward to this check because I don't really agree with why it is being given out. OK, maybe agree isn't the right word. I don't think it is going to help anything in long term. I wish I could be like that one guy who said that he is going to use his money to buy a cup of coffee every day for a year. Or I wish I could give a large bit of it to charity.
We are planning to pay off some of our debt (this includes paying off one credit card completely) and spending the rest on much needed household items like a new litter box for the cats. And I am thrilled. I can't wait to spend it on a BILL. Watch out Capital One!
In the back of my mind, I am really worried that one of the cars is going to die again. I forgot to mention that after the fuel pump went out, three days later the water pump went out. I seriously hate cars.
Have you gotten your stimulus check yet? What did you spend it on or what are you planning to spend it on?

We got our stimulus check about a month later than we expected it, but it was exactly the amount the IRS calculator thing on the website said it would be. Our delay also had to do with the fact that we filed through TurboTax.
We simply used ours to help us get through a low-income month. We also used some of it to get oil changes on our car, and to pay off one random bill we had, which is another story entirely.
I went to the ER 5 1/2 years ago for a weird situation I had. I paid a co-pay at the ER that day and we filed insurance. I never heard another thing about it. Then, a month ago, we were trying to get a personal loan to help us through the move and all of that, and there was a random "seriously delinquent" charge on my credit report that was keeping us from getting approved. I did some investigation and learned it was from this ER visit and they had the incorrect address. I pretty much got lost in the system, because the collections agency had only been trying to contact me for 2 months....so I paid that random bill. The good part about it was that because they had the wrong info and I took the initiative to pay it off, they changed it on my credit report to "good standing" and it will be gone off my report in like 2 months.
So, we paid an unexpected bill, went out to dinner, got oil changes for the car and simply lived on it.
It came at a time when we really needed it too, late or not. I too was very excited about spending it on things we needed - watch out Parkland Hospital!
I know what you mean about the reason they're being distributed, though. It sort of makes it hard to just enjoy the money.
Hey Jenny. I think our stimulus check went into the checking account, where it's being saved to buy a Prius. I guess we should move it to savings. We don't think sometimes.
By the way, the name of that movie is The Power of Forgiveness. It features the Amish community, Elie Wiesel, Thich Nhat Han (spelling wrong on that one) and others. Here's a website about it: http://www.journeyfilms.com/content.asp?contentid=814
Peace to you!!! I'm going to check it out, too. I hear it's at our local library.
My check jut went into general survival funds - rent, bills, etc.
fun.
